After graduating from the Ottawa School of Art Diploma Programme as a mature student, David has been the recipient of numerous prizes – a study grant from Bell Canada, Best in Show awards from Loomis, Wallack’s and Artguise as well as awards through the Ottawa Art Association and the Glebe Fine Arts show.
David’s sumptuous, colourful florals, backed with subtle human figures adding to the visual story, can be seen regularly at the Ottawa School of Art and can be found in collections around the world. Shows in 2019 included the Glebe Fine Arts Show.
His work can best be described as “romantic expressionism” in nature and colour. The objective is to create a still life of plants and flowers together with figure studies that are a presence, not a background. Inspiration is taken from Michelangelo’s quote, “All good paintings start with the figure”. These living things create a joy and excitement all their own. David’s work is the creative force of both drawing and painting; “I cannot separate an image from a combination of both. You will see this in my work as I move from the drawing process to painting. This process is often repeated over and over in layers”.
